Welcome to the Markleeville Disc Golf/Terrapin Pines Enthusiast
Some of you may have lost interest, moved away, or are wondering how you got on this list. And others may have been waiting and know of friends or relatives who want to be included on the email list now that we are getting closer to construction. So now is the time to let us know if you are no longer interested, or if there are any changes with your contact info. And time to let others know they can contact this email to be added to our list.
If you are no longer interested you can stop reading here. But if you want more info, read on!
We will continue to use Facebook @ Terrapin Pines Disc Golf Markleeville CA, but this email list will become much more active providing regular updates. It will be the main source of information on volunteer opportunities, workdays, and the best way to ask questions and get answers.
Here is the most current information on where we stand;
There is no longer a question whether Terrapin Pines will be built, it’s just a matter of time, waiting for all the parts to come together so we can start construction and get it open. Our special use permit is expected in early spring. That wording would suggest before mid-May. Some surface work that doesn’t require purchasing materials can begin as soon as the permit is issued. We will probably do 1-2 days a week on this prep work as we wait for the results of our grant application. Once all funding is secured and we can purchase and install the equipment we will increase the number of workdays to give people options for when they can show up to help.
We will get a yes or no on our grant funding in either early June, or early September. Receiving this funding has become increasingly important to our project as we have recently been informed that we are required to remove a large number of hazard trees to assure the safety of our guests prior to installing infrastructure and opening to the public. Overall we are happy the tree removal is being allowed but it does take time and money to get it done. The new parking area and vault toilet are also part of the grant but this portion of the project does not need to be completed prior to opening.
If we do not receive the grant we would still be able to fund the equipment, albeit at a much higher cost to all sponsors. Tree removal would be difficult, but not impossible to accomplish. At the minimum there would be a significant delay in course construction without the grant to fund tree removal and equipment.
The pace we can proceed is dependent on the grant application, but the good news is that everything else is in place to move forward. Design is complete (with a few tweaks expected). Engineering is complete for the parking lot. Partnerships with agencies and local government are established. Estimates for equipment have been acquired. Sign plan, maintenance plan, and other components of the Master Plan are well on their way to completion. Agencies who can provide tree removal have been contacted. A variety of local contractors and artists have said they want to help. And most importantly we have a great regional disc golf community who have made it clear that they are ready to get to work.
Next steps. You should have all received an invitation to AORA/ATA/MDG quarterly meeting April 7th, 10:00 am at the Markleeville Library. It is doubtful we will have additional updates about Terrapin Pines at this meeting but all of you are welcome to attend if you are interested in meeting us, asking question, and seeing how our 501(c)3 operates.
You will soon receive an invitation to a tour of the course, which could happen as early as April 4th but is dependent on weather. If the 4th doesn’t work out I will check the forecast and schedule something for the soonest Saturday that the weather cooperates. There will only be a five day notice of intent and then confirmation 2-3 days prior to the tour as we get details on the forecast. The next email you will probably receive after that will be to let you know the special use permit has been issued and provide you with information on a public meeting and upcoming workdays. After that there will be regular emails to let you know what work we will be doing that week.
Preliminary map, pars/distances, and our first advertisement flyer are attached. All information on these docs are subject to change, and there are some discrepancies already between the map and the par/distance because of recent adjustments.
Well, I warned you it was a long email…Thank you for your patience. I look forward to working with you all.–
